Mediterranean Diet also prevents type-2 Diabetes

mesogeiaki 02According to a new research published at the beginning of January 2014, adults who are at risk for heart disease and follow a Mediterranean Diet rich in Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), may have a lower risk of Diabetes (type-2), even without a total calorie restriction or without increasing exercise.
Aim of the study was to investigate whether the Mediterranean Diet, without energy constraints may help to prevent Diabetes.

The participants were randomly assigned 3 possible diets: 1) a Mediterranean Diet supplemented with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), 2) a Mediterranean Diet supplemented enriched with nuts, and 3) a controlled diet (with advice for a low-fat diet).

PREDIMED researchers (from Spain) showed that Mediterranean Diet has a favorable effect not only in preventing myocardial infarction and cerebral thrombosis, but also in preventing Diabetes. Notably, the effectiveness of this programme was much higher amongst the people receiving EVOO, with a statistically significant reduction in risk of 40% (!) - while the group of people who received a nuts-based diet obtained a reduction of 18%.
